Buildings shape the spaces between them. That in-between space is where community life unfolds.

Architecture is often discussed as individual buildings, but its greatest influence on community life lies in how buildings meet the street and relate to one another. Entrances, ground floors, courtyards and building heights all shape the experience of walking through a neighbourhood.

Human scale

Streets lined with active ground floors, windows and doors feel safer and more interesting than long blank walls. A human scale — buildings that relate to the size of the person walking past — encourages people to linger.

Light, air and green

Access to daylight, fresh air and greenery has measurable effects on health and well-being. Careful placement of buildings protects these qualities for neighbours as well as for new residents.

Good architecture is generous: it gives something back to the public realm.
